Welcome to the First Flight Society, one of aviation's oldest organizations. We invite you to become a part of aviation's past, present and future by joining the Society. Your membership will help us accomplish our goals of memorializing the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright and promoting aviation in all its forms. Our website will give you lots of information not only about the origins of aviation, but also about major aviation milestones and events of today. You will find out what the First Flight Society accomplishes, how to join the Society, how to contact us, and how to link up to other organizations in aviation and aviation education. Return to the Outer Banks every December 17th to celebrate the "12 seconds that changed the world".
One of the most important times of the year for the First Flight Society is December 17th when we commemorate and celebrate the historic achievement of the first powered flight. The Society annually marks this event on the grounds of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, maintained by the National Park Service in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The day's activities include a ceremony at the Memorial . . . the induction of a major figure in aviation into the Society's Shrine . . . a thrilling fly-over of civilian, military and historic aircraft . . . and an annual luncheon and formal Ball. This annual celebration is a joint effort of the First Flight Society, the National Park Service, the military and many other participants. The First Flight Society has members from across the United States as well as other parts of the world. They all share the common bond of an interest in aviation and in preserving and promoting the accomplishments of the Wright brothers. The Society is able to carry on its important work because of dues and other support from its members as well as businesses and corporations. We invite you to explore our membership categories and membership benefits and join the Society today.
